Stick with names you recognize if you’re going to be shopping on the net. Macy’s, etc.. Check out your local phone book to see if any of the boutiques listed have web sites. If you’re planning on getting into a high end dress you probably will want to deal directly with the shop. I’ve had problems with fittings and those places are a real bear to get a refund out of. Hope you find something pretty!!!

I like Coldwater Creek and Chico’s. They also have a lot of retail stores, in larger market areas.

I have bought several clothing items from a woman in Turin Italy, who is somehow in the wholesale clothing business. The quality was superb and the price was right.
Think about what your objective is in “up market” and how “up market” you want to be. Is clothing an investment to be worn for several seasons or is it entertainment, that you change with each passing fad?
If you are looking for investment clothing and have the money to travel, a trip to Hong Kong and some custom made clothing might be worth your while.
