No, please don’t do that. I’m not saying online auction sites are not a good place to shop for horse tack, but don’t buy the cheapo brands. You probably know which ones I mean, they are unknown, never-before-heard-of brands that come with all kinds of stuff all together, maybe a bridle, reins, breast plate, et cetera along with your saddle, and it’s all for some ridiculously low price. Remember, you get what you pay for! With these, you will get icky leather that turns hard very quickly and is very ill-fitting for your horse.

So is the best idea to visit the local tack shops? Yes, do that first, and see what type and brand you prefer by sitting in multiple saddles and trying them out. Once you determine that type you want, here’s what to do.

Go back to your computer and start looking online at auctions and classified ads for one of the really good expensive brands, but find a used one for sale. This way, you get two benefits. Lower price and the leather is already broken in. Believe me, you will really appreciate the soft supple leather as opposed to something brand new that still need multiple rides to soften up.

You can also look at tack shops for consignment saddles too. Of course you can always buy new but this way you get a really great deal and a quality saddle too.
